Your Guide to Fort Collins' Best Refill Station for Eco-Friendly Products

If you've ever felt guilty tossing another empty plastic bottle into the recycling bin—or worse, realized that most plastic doesn't actually get recycled—you're not alone.

The average American generates about 4.5 pounds of trash per day, and a huge chunk of that comes from single-use packaging for products we buy over and over again: dish soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, body wash, and home cleaners.

Refill stations offer a solid solution: bring your own container, fill it with what you need, pay for the product (not the packaging), and skip the landfill guilt entirely.

Here in Fort Collins, Cedar & Sage Mercantile operates one of the most comprehensive refill stations in Northern Colorado.

We’ve got you covered for everything from cleaning products to skincare, body care to household essentials.

Whether you're brand new to refilling or a seasoned pro looking for better options, this guide answers the questions we hear most:

What's the difference between a refillery and a bulk store?

Is it actually cheaper?

What can you buy?

And why does any of this matter for your health and the environment?

Let's dive in.

What's the Difference Between a Refillery and a Bulk Store?

People use these terms interchangeably, but they're actually different shopping experiences.

Bulk stores typically focus on food and pre-packaged goods in larger quantities to reduce per-unit cost and packaging waste.

Refilleries focus on liquid and cream products you use at home: cleaning supplies, personal care items, skincare, and household products. You bring your own container (or buy one), fill it with exactly what you need, and pay by volume or quantity.

At Cedar & Sage, we operate a refill station (not a bulk food store but we do sometimes call it that for people who are searching for “eco-friendly bulk products”.

At our mercantile and our online shop, you'll find cleaning products, A.B. by Cedar & Sage skincare, body wash, body lotion, toothpaste, and more—all available to refill in your own containers.

Some items like dishwasher pods, laundry pods, and razor blades are sold by quantity rather than volume, but the principle is the same: buy only what you need, eliminate packaging waste.

The key difference is that refilleries prioritize reusable containers and eliminating single-use packaging, while bulk stores prioritize buying larger quantities.

Both reduce waste, but refilleries take it a step further by removing packaging from the equation entirely.

Is It Actually Cheaper to Buy from a Refillery?

The honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes it's about the same, and occasionally it costs slightly more but you're getting better quality and eliminating waste.

Where you save money:

When you refill, you're not paying for brand marketing, fancy packaging, or shipping heavy water-filled bottles across the country.

Most conventional cleaning products and personal care items are 80-95% water so you're essentially paying to ship water in plastic. Refill stations eliminate that markup.

You also control exactly how much you buy.

Need just 8 ounces of all-purpose cleaner to try it out? Buy 8 ounces.

Running low on laundry detergent but only need enough for two weeks until your next trip? Fill accordingly.

This prevents overbuying and wasting products that expire or lose effectiveness sitting in your cabinet for months.

Where costs are comparable:

Quality matters, and refilleries stock concentrated, eco-certified products made with plant-based ingredients rather than cheap synthetic fillers.

When you compare refillery prices to premium eco-brands at grocery stores (like Seventh Generation, Method, or Mrs. Meyer's), the cost is often similar or better, especially since you're buying concentrate and reusing containers instead of paying for new packaging every time.

The real savings add up over time:

Think about your annual spending on cleaning products, shampoo, body wash, dish soap, and laundry detergent.

If you refill even half of those products, you're eliminating 20-50+ plastic bottles per year from your household waste.

You're also avoiding the "convenience tax" of grabbing whatever's on sale at the grocery store, which often means lower-quality ingredients that require more product to work effectively.

Plus, the containers you buy once at a refillery (glass bottles, aluminum containers) last for years. After that initial investment, you're only paying for product.

What Products Can You Buy at Cedar & Sage's Refill Station?

We stock 31 bulk and refillable products across multiple categories. Here's what you'll find:

Personal Care & Body Products

Your skin is your largest organ, and what you put on it matters.

Conventional body care products often contain parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and other ingredients linked to hormone disruption and skin irritation. Our refillable personal care line eliminates those concerns.

Body Wash - Plant-based formulas that cleanse without stripping natural oils or leaving chemical residue on your skin. Available in multiple scents or fragrance-free options.

Body Lotion - Lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas made with natural oils and butters.

Fort Collins' dry climate is brutal on skin year-round, and these lotions provide genuine hydration without greasy residue or synthetic fragrance.

Toothpaste - Natural formulas that clean effectively without fluoride controversy, sodium lauryl sulfate (the foaming agent that can irritate mouths), or artificial sweeteners.

Some people prefer fluoride-free options; we stock those alongside fluoridated versions so you can choose what works for your family.

Hand Soap - Gentle, effective cleansing for frequent hand-washing without drying out skin. Made with plant-derived surfactants and natural scents.

Skincare: A.B. by Cedar & Sage

Our house brand, A.B. by Cedar & Sage, offers refillable natural skincare formulated right here in Fort Collins.

These aren't generic bulk products. They're thoughtfully created with botanical ingredients that actually work.

Available for refill: facial cleansers, serums (including our popular Niacinamide & NAG Serum), facial lotions, and treatments.

All formulated without synthetic fragrances, parabens, or harsh preservatives.

You can test products in-store before committing to a full refill, which eliminates the "buying skincare online and hating it" problem entirely.

Specialty Items

Razor Blades - We stock refillable safety razors and replacement blades sold by quantity.

One, quality safety razor lasts decades; replacement blades cost pennies compared to disposable cartridge razors. This is one of those swaps that saves money almost immediately while eliminating tons of plastic waste.

Storage Containers - We carry humangear Stax, modular containers that click together with a 180-degree twist. Perfect for organizing refilled products, storing bulk spices or snacks, carrying pills or supplements, or packing travel toiletries.

Available in small, medium, large, and XL sizes with leak-proof seals.

How Does Refilling Actually Work?

If you've never used a refill station, the process might feel unfamiliar at first.

Here's what to expect at Cedar & Sage:

Step 1: Bring a Container or Buy One

You can bring any clean, dry container from home—old soap bottles, mason jars, squeeze bottles, whatever works.

If you're new to refilling or don't have appropriate containers, we sell glass bottles and aluminum containers in various sizes.

You pay for the container once, then bring it back every time you refill.

Step 2: Choose Your Products

Browse our refill station and decide what you need. We stock everything clearly labeled with ingredients, certifications, and usage instructions.

Not sure if a product will work for you? Ask! We're happy to explain the differences between formulas or recommend products for specific needs (sensitive skin, hard water, Colorado's dry climate, etc.).

Step 3: Fill Your Container

Most products are measured by volume in ounces.

Fill your container to your desired amount, whether that's 4 ounces to try something new or 32 ounces to stock up. Items like laundry pods, dishwasher pods, and razor blades are sold by quantity instead.

Step 4: Pay for What You Got

We weigh or count your product and you pay only for what's inside the container. No paying for packaging, branding, or shipping water across the country.

Step 5: Bring Your Container Back

When you run out, bring your container back and refill. That's it.

The same glass bottle you bought in January can serve you for years, eliminating dozens of plastic bottles from landfills.

Why Refilleries Matter: Environmental & Personal Impact

The Environmental Case

Americans generate 292.4 million tons of trash annually, and packaging makes up nearly 30% of that.

Single-use plastic bottles for cleaning products, shampoo, body wash, and similar items are a massive contributor.

Here's the even bigger problem: most plastic doesn't actually get recycled.

The recycling rate for plastic in the US hovers around 5-6%. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators, or as pollution in oceans and waterways.

Even when plastic is "recycled," it's typically downcycled into lower-quality products that can't be recycled again. It just delays the trip to the landfill.

Refill stations break this cycle entirely.

By reusing the same containers indefinitely, you're removing packaging waste from the equation.

If every household in Fort Collins eliminated just 20 plastic bottles per year through refilling, that's over 3 million bottles kept out of waste streams annually.

Beyond packaging, refill products are typically concentrated formulas.

You're not shipping water-filled bottles across the country, which reduces transportation emissions significantly.

Concentrated products also mean fewer trucks on roads, less fuel burned, and lower carbon footprints.

The Personal Health Case

Conventional cleaning products and personal care items often contain ingredients you wouldn't want in your home if you knew what they were:

  • Phthalates - Used in synthetic fragrances, linked to hormone disruption

  • Triclosan - Antibacterial agent that contributes to antibiotic resistance

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) - Foaming agent that cn irritate skin and eyes

  • Optical brighteners - Make clothes "look" cleaner by coating fibers with fluorescent chemicals

  • Chlorine bleach - Releases toxic fumes, especially when mixed with other cleaners

  • Synthetic fragrances - Can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals, trigger headaches and allergies

Products at our refill station are curated for safety.

At Cedar & Sage, everything we stock is EWG verified, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and free from the sketchy ingredients listed above.

You're not reading labels wondering what "fragrance" actually means or Googling chemical names. We do that for you.

For families with kids, pets, or anyone with sensitivities, this matters enormously.

You can clean your house, wash your clothes, and care for your body without worrying about chemical exposure or triggering reactions.

The Economic Reality

Refilling isn't just about feeling good, it makes practical sense too.

You avoid the "convenience markup" of grabbing whatever's on sale at the grocery store. You buy exactly what you need, preventing half-used bottles from cluttering cabinets. And you invest in quality products that work better, so you use less over time.

The initial container purchase might feel like an expense, but amortize that cost over years of use and it's negligible.

You're also supporting local businesses and keeping money in the Fort Collins economy instead of funneling it to multinational corporations.

What to Look For in Eco-Friendly Cleaning & Personal Care Products

Not all "green" or "natural" products are created equal.

Greenwashing is rampant and companies slap leaves on labels and use words like "pure" or "botanical" without any real or meaningful changes to formulations.

Here's what actually matters:

Third-Party Certifications

EPA Safer Choice - Products with this label meet strict EPA criteria for human and environmental health. Every ingredient is evaluated for safety, and the product must perform as well as conventional alternatives.

EWG Verified - The Environmental Working Group maintains rigorous standards for ingredient safety. EWG-verified products contain no ingredients of concern and full transparency in labeling.

Leaping Bunny - This certification guarantees no animal testing at any stage of product development. Cruelty-free verified by an independent third party, not just brand claims.

ECOLOGO - A North American certification for reduced environmental impact across the product lifecycle—from ingredient sourcing through manufacturing and disposal.

B Corp - While not product-specific, B Corp certification indicates companies meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Ingredient Transparency

Quality refilleries list full ingredients for every product. If a brand won't disclose what's inside, that's a red flag. Look for:

  • Plant-based surfactants (like coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside)

  • Natural preservatives (like sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate)

  • Essential oils for scent instead of "fragrance"

  • Biodegradable formulas that break down safely in water systems

Concentrated Formulas

Concentrates mean less water weight, smaller containers, reduced shipping emissions, and more uses per bottle.

Many refillery products are 2-10x more concentrated than grocery store equivalents, so while the per-ounce price might look higher, the per-use cost is often lower.

Minimal or Reusable Packaging

This is where refilleries really take the lead over just buying organic or natural.

Even "eco-friendly" brands sold in stores still use single-use bottles, they might be recycled plastic or biodegradable materials, but they're still designed for one use then disposal. Refilleries eliminate that entirely.

Beyond Cleaning: Complete Your Eco-Friendly Home Kit

Refillable products are the foundation, but the right tools make eco-friendly cleaning easier and more effective. At Cedar & Sage, we stock complementary items that work alongside our refill station:

Reusable Cleaning Cloths - Swedish dishcloths, organic cotton towels, and other washable alternatives to paper towels. One Swedish dishcloth replaces 17 rolls of paper towels and lasts for months.

Wool Dryer Balls - Replace dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener with reusable wool balls that reduce drying time, soften fabrics mechanically (not chemically), and last for 1000+ loads. Add a few drops of essential oil for natural scent.

Natural Scrub Brushes - Wood and natural fiber brushes for dishes, vegetables, surfaces—anything you'd normally use a plastic scrubber for. They work better, last longer, and compost at end of life.

Reusable Produce Bags - Organic cotton mesh bags for grocery shopping. Lightweight, washable, and eliminate those flimsy plastic produce bags you use once then throw away.

Beeswax Wraps - Replace plastic wrap for food storage. Mold with your hands' warmth, rinse clean, reuse for a year or more.

These tools aren't luxuries. They're practical upgrades that make sustainable living easier, not harder.

Getting Started with Refilling

Ready to try it? Here's how to start:

  1. Gather containers - Check your recycling bin for clean bottles, or stop by Cedar & Sage to buy reusable glass or aluminum containers.

  2. Start with one product - Don't overhaul everything at once. Pick one item or a small collection of items you buy frequently (dish soap or a small collection of kitchen products) and try refilling that first.

  3. Visit the shop - Come see the refill station in person, ask questions, smell products if scent matters to you, and get a feel for how it works.

  4. Bring containers back - Once you're out, bring your container back and refill. The routine becomes second nature quickly.

  5. Expand gradually - As you run out of conventional products, replace them with refillable versions. Within a few months, you'll have transitioned most of your household without feeling overwhelmed.
